Starting the Community Forum

The project started with a popular forum plugin. While feature-rich, it was complex to set up and didn't integrate well with other site features  so we began moving key functionality directly into the theme.

The Challenge

site originally relied on a popular community forum plugin. While it offered many features out of the box, the setup was complex and the plugin didn't integrate cleanly with the rest of the site's features creating friction for both developers and editors.

What We Did to Improve It

Created a Custom Post Type A dedicated post type was added directly in the child theme, giving us full control over the forum's data structure without relying on plugin-defined schemas.
Brought Key Features into the Theme — Core forum functionality was migrated from the plugin into the child theme. This eliminated plugin conflicts and made the feature set predictable and maintainable.
Reduced Plugin Reliance By folding plugin features into the theme, we cut down on the number of active plugins simplifying future updates and reducing the risk of incompatibilities.

The Result:

This was the first step toward a more stable and flexible site architecture. The community forum became a first-class feature of the theme rather than an external dependency.
